Remote meetings as if they were real can now be held in all countries where Telefónica was present thanks to the simultaneous launch of the 'telepresence' service in 2009, with Cisco as a technology partner. High quality audio and video systems, with no delays in image or sound, as well as collaboration tools to enrich the meeting, made it possible to have a virtual meeting with the same naturalness as if it were a face-to-face meeting.
Telefónica's international activity continues in different markets and continents: in 2009 we strengthened our strategic alliance with China Unicom and increased our stake in the Chinese operator by more than 8%; we closed the purchase of the German operator Hansenet; we acquired the IP communications platform JAJAH in the United Kingdom and in Spain we bought 22% of Canal+ from Sogecable. We also made one sale, the 32.18% stake in Méditel, the second largest Moroccan mobile operator.
Telefónica's former presidents have marked the course of the company at a given moment in its history. To honour their relevance and to benefit from their experience in promoting the social and cultural activities of Fundación Telefónica, in 2008, the Board of Directors, at the proposal of the Chairman, César Alierta, approved the incorporation of these personalities to the Board of Trustees of its Foundation. For this reason, Antonio Barrera de Irimo, Salvador Sánchez-Terán, Luis Solana, Cándido Velázquez-Gaztelu and Juan Villalonga meet for the first time in an institutional and unique event in the Telefónica District. And a month later, in an even more famous act, the King of Spain received them at the Zarzuela Palace.
